Your middle schoolers run into words like interruption and transportable every day, in every class. When they can split those words into parts they already know, they stop skipping them. These bell ringers practice exactly that, in five to seven minutes at the start of class.

How it works
Each week focuses on one morpheme, and every week follows the same five-day routine. Students learn the routine in the first week, so for the rest of the year their attention goes to the words, not the directions.

  • Day 1, Notice: find the week’s morpheme inside words they already know
  • Day 2, Analyze: break words into parts and predict what they mean
  • Day 3, Construct: build new words from those parts
  • Day 4, Solve: use the root along with context to work out an unfamiliar word
  • Day 5, Comprehend: read a short passage and apply everything, including words they haven’t been taught

One page for every reader
There are no leveled versions to copy. The teacher guide includes Level It notes for every day, showing how to add support for students who are stuck or stretch the ones who are ready for more. It works for struggling and on-level readers in the same room.
